Women will always need to be beautiful and well made-up at anytime, anywhere. For the sake of vanity, they will always be open to investing in different cosmetics and tools that will help make the beautifying endeavor a breeze anywhere they will be. It is not surprising that there are so many types and brands of cosmetics and tools for them.
When women have already bought the best and most satisfying cosmetics for themselves, they must make sure they will have the best makeup and vanity mirrors. Expect a fine lady to carry with her a handy piece of such mirrors anywhere they go through their handbags. At home, do not be surprised to see an ample corner allotted for good makeup and vanity mirrors.
Through the years, people have invested heavily into good and reliable makeup and vanity mirrors. The rising demand for such reflectors has prompted the production of more interesting and practical beauty mirrors. Whether on stands, mounted to walls or hand carried in bags, makeup and vanity mirrors are truly a necessity for women who aim to always look presentable and pleasing.
Good lighting
Users should know that a good lighting is the key to the success of every makeup application procedure. This is because, through proper and effective lighting, quantity and blending of makeup application is ensured. Can you imagine applying cosmetics in darkness or in shadow-causing light? You can do an experiment of it, but it will be nonsense to try because the result will surely be disastrous.
Light need not be installed in the mirror itself. Some people put lights on the sides and on the top of their makeup and vanity mirrors. Some simply make sure the room where the mirrors are located is well lit and receives a great amount of daylight during daytime. For stand mirrors and handheld types, it is important to find an area where there is a great and abundant supply of light. Light color also is important especially if you aim to keep the balance of makeup to your skin color.
Magnification of makeup and vanity mirrors
It can be scary at times, but magnification is significant and helpful when polishing good and fine detail applications. When tweezing, magnified images from makeup and vanity mirrors are also essential. When magnification is advised, note that you do not need a magnifying glass where you can already look up close the details of your smallest pores.
Good makeup and vanity mirrors are those that are producing eight times of magnification for stand mirrors. Some people assert that 5 times magnification is already sufficient in providing distortion-free images and total convenience. Mounted and travel style makeup and vanity mirrors are optimal and best when they have five times magnification.
Other good features
For stand mirrors, it will be best if you would find ones that have variable lighting condition for use all day or all night. Illumination should also be optimal and shadow-free. In contrast, halo illumination mirrors are recommended because they help make visible even the smallest facial details. Lastly, the arm should easily adjust for proper and good positioning.
Mounted makeup and vanity mirrors should also have variable lighting condition and halo illumination to make every detail visible. The mirror should be well and securely mounted in a concrete or secured wall. Falling mirrors can be a source of accidents.
As for travel style makeup and vanity mirrors, illumination must be adjustable for light conditions whether at evening or daylight. Women of course will like it best if their handy beauty mirrors are no more than two inches thick when folded.
Would You Like Your Cataract Surgery With a Double Shot?
Cataract surgery and coffee have something in common. Five to ten years ago they shared this attribute: there were few, if any options. You wanted coffee? OK, would you like that with cream or sugar? Had cataracts? Would you like… Actually, there were no real options five to ten years ago. If you needed surgery it was scheduled and your surgeon chose the intraocular lens (IOL) for you.
Now, however, there is a dizzying array of options available to anyone who saunters up to the barista or the cataract surgeon. Coffee? Would you like that in a Grande or Venti? Cream, lowfat milk, or soy? Vanilla, sugar-free vanilla, caramel, mocha, or flavor-of-the-week? The same is now true of cataract surgery. Would you like a spherical or aspheric IOL? Astigmatism correction? How about the ability to see distance, intermediate, and up close? , You can now select for two out of the three — a major improvement over just a few years ago.
So how do you choose? As a cataract surgeon who has performed over 2,000 cataract surgeries, I can tell you it is not an easy decision. You only have two eyes so it’s an important decision to make if you are presently in need of cataract surgery. (If you’re not in need now, you should be assured that the technology improves every year – increasing your menu of choices by the time you’re ready.). The best way to begin is to consider your goals.
With coffee, there is one initiating decision: caffeinated or decaf? With cataract surgery there is one key question: “Do you mind wearing glasses?” If the answer is “No,” then you’re done. Stop reading this article because the rest is not applicable to you.
If you dream of throwing away your glasses after cataract surgery, keep dreaming. There are currently no IOLs that will allow you to do that. If, however, you have certain activities that you would like to do without glasses and wouldn’t mind wearing glasses “occasionally,” then read on - because the newer advanced IOLs can provide for that. Following is a list of available alternatives sorted by need. Simply find the description that fits you best to find the IOL for you.
One caveat: all of the options except the first will require an out-of-pocket expense. Medicare and most insurances do not pay for the IOL “upgrades.” If you want your insurance to cover the entire tab then Option #1 is for you.
Option #1: You don’t mind wearing glasses all the time. Congratulations. The standard IOL covered by insurance will meet your needs just fine and with the money you’ve saved you can upgrade your coffee for a year or so at your local barista. Take note, however, Medicare does not cover the fee for refraction (an exam to determine what glasses you will need after surgery), so save back $50-100 (plus the cost of those designer frames) for this.
Option #2: You would like good distance vision without glasses but don’t mind wearing glasses to use the computer and read. You may be a candidate for either an aspheric or toric IOL. The aspheric IOL corrects what are called “higher order aberrations” resulting in excellent distance vision. However, if your cornea has any significant astigmatism, this will have to be corrected with either a “toric” IOL or corneal refractive surgery. Both of these would be at an additional cost.
Option #3: You would like good distance and intermediate (computer) vision without glasses but wouldn’t mind wearing glasses for reading. You have two options available to you: the ReZoom multifocal IOL or the Crystalens accommodating IOL. The ReZoom IOL simultaneously focuses two images onto your retina so you can see both distance and intermediate objects at the same time. The trade-off, however, is that there will be small circles (halos) around lights at night. Most people get used to this with time but a small number of people (about 5%) find these halos to be a significant distraction. The Crystalens uses what is called pseudo-accommodation: it uses tiny muscles in the eye to move the lens back and forth changing the focusing power of the IOL. Although there are no halos associated with this IOL, not all people are able to “train” their eye muscles sufficiently after surgery to get the desired range of vision.
Option #4: You would like good distance and reading vision without glasses but wouldn’t mind glasses for intermediate (computer) vision. You also have two options available to you: the Alcon ReSTOR IOL or the AMO Tecnis IOL. Both use what is called “diffractive optics” to split light into both a distance and a near image. Since two images are simultaneously focused on your retina, there will be small circles (halos) around lights at night. As with multifocal IOLs, most people get used to this with time but a small number of people (about 5%) find these halos to be a significant distraction. Glasses are often still required for intermediate (computer) work.
An additional caveat: no matter which IOL you choose, you may still need night-time glasses. The reason for this is that your pupil dilates in the dark allowing rays of light from the edges of your cornea into the eye. These rays are focused at a different strength than those from the center of the cornea so you end up a little near-sighted when driving. Generally, a simple pair of night-driving spectacles correct this condition.
If you are currently considering cataract surgery I hope this helped you make this ever-more-difficult decision. If you don’t need surgery yet, I promise to provide updates on my website or blog whenever there are significant technological changes that increase your menu of choices.

Microsoft Xbox: the New Generation of Game Systems

Entertainment is an integral part of our lives. In fact, there are various forms of entertainment that existed during the pre-colonial era, such as watching opera and musical theater plays. Betting is also an active recreation during the colonial times. It is designed to provide pleasure to individuals of varying age groups and areas of interest.
However, with the rapid development of technology nowadays, entertainment is not just about watching operas and musical plays. Entertainment in the 21st century is now dependent on the development of technology—animated and digital films, television programs, and video game consoles.
Video game console means entertainment for the younger members of our society. Because of the animated game characters and graphics similar to real-life characters, video game consoles became one of the hottest items in the electronic market. Since its existence in 1972 (when Magnavox released its 1st home video game console, which is the Magnavox Odyssey) until the continuous release of its new generation game systems, video game consoles are now what we call the “entertainment of the 21st century and beyond”.
Because of the popularity of these video game consoles to the gaming public, particularly to the young generation, different technology firms released different game consoles that cater to the needs of the gaming public. It paved the way to the birth of the sixth generation of video game consoles, which the Xbox belongs to.
Xbox’s producer, which is no other than the Bill Gates’ Microsoft Corporation, said that Xbox game console takes you away beyond the ordinary entertainment. It redefines the way you play the game of your choice. Aside from games, you have access to music and movies through this high-technology game console system. Thus, it lets you share good times with your friends and even lets you compete with other gamers around the world.
Xbox was Microsoft’s first independent business enterprise in the video game console industry, after the development of the tools for MSX (the standardized home computer architecture of Microsoft in the 1980s) and the operating system for Windows. It was launched on different dates: November 15, 2001 in North America, February 22, 2002 in Japan, and March 14, 2002 in Europe.
The development of Xbox was initially facilitated by a small team formed by Microsoft, which included the famous high energy physicist and game developer Seamus Blackley. The rumors of the release of a Microsoft-developed video game console first spread at the end of 1999 following interviews of Microsoft big boss Bill Gates, saying that the company is developing a gaming and at the same time a multimedia device that is essential in the convergence of digital entertainment era. And the company confirmed such rumors through a press release on the “Xbox project” on March 10, 2000.
As previously mentioned, the first launch of Xbox was in North America on November 15, 2001. On its first launch, most of Xbox’s launch titles became one of the best-selling games at the end of 2001. Some of the successful launch titles of Xbox were the Halo: Combat Evolved and its sequel, Halo 2 (which became the most played game in the Xbox Live), NFL Fever 2002, Dead or Alive 3, and Project Gotham Racing.
Xbox’s design was based on the fact that there must be a game system that will take advantage of the slowdown of saturated PC gaming market and at the same time integrate a built-in Ethernet adapter. It was the first video game console to integrate a hard disk drive into its system, which is used mainly to store game data compressed in a ZIP archive and content download from Xbox Live. Thus, it eliminated the need for a separate memory card, which is popularized by Sony’s Playstation. Most of the Xbox games make use of the console’s hard drive as the disk cache for quicker game loading time. There are also games that support “Custom soundtracks”, which allows the user to rip music from standard audio CDs and add it to the soundtrack of the game.
With the Xbox as one of the modern video game consoles ever produced, it provides unusual entertainment for gamers; especially those who are looking for a gaming experience that will make them crave for it.
Yes, Microsoft’s Xbox did it—one of the game systems that you will love once you get your hand on it.

Powershot S3 and Powershot S5 – Two Generations of Ulta-zoom Cameras by Canon

S3 and S5 - Two Generations of Ulta-Zoom Cameras by Canon
In common practice, the comparative test aims at distinguishing the advantages of one producer over another within one and the same price category and functional group. That is why models by different producers representing the same section of the market are taken for observation. Canon cameras are usually compared with their group-mates from Panasonic, Sony or Nikon. But we at DigiCamFriends.com have agreed to take another way and get to know what obvious innovations may be found in the Canon PowerShot S5 IS (hereafter, Canon S5) in comparison with the Canon PowerShot S3 IS (hereafter, Canon S3) that used to be extremely popular.
Let’s imagine we know nothing about new features developed by Canon for the new model S5 that appeared after the Canon S3:
Physical view
Canon models of S - series, being different from another Canon PowerShot “subclass” (that is models of A-series), are characterized as “amateurish” but with some skills of “professional”. This is for report or art-report shooting, but not for the motionless photos, something like “a tree and me” type. From this point of view both models have a very handy design.
In fact physical view of the camera has not been changed, except first- the enlarging of the movable screen from 2 to 2.5 inches and second- the replacement of one of the control buttons. And while the latter novelty hardly seems to be pleasant, the first one fits quite natural- it’s become more convenient to take photos with a larger screen.

Optics
The cameras have the same lens construction type with identical settings (the market interpretation of the term construction - the quantity of the optical elements and it’s groups). Unfortunately, there was no information found on the manufacturer’s Web-site mentioning that these lenses are identical; so I won’t insist on theoretical view point, but make a display with some photo examples.
Example 1 : Shots with max. depth of field (the aperture priority mode, the shutter is closed down; Flash is on; ISO80 sensitivity; the white balance - “Flash”). The distance between the objects is about 15-25 cm. Auto focus on the handle of the cup. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5.
Example 2 : Shots with min. depth of field (the aperture priority mode, the shutter is absolutely open; Flash is on; ISO80 sensitivity; the white balance - “Flash”). The distance between the objects- about 15-25 cm. Auto focus on the handle of the cup. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5.
These cameras are recognized among the majority of digital cameras for equally good color reproduction and quick focusing on the objects, even if they are trying to escape from your camera.
Example 3: Focus on objects moving to and fro with 12x optical zoom in. On the left, a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5.
It doesn’t make much sense if we start making a display of numerous examples of similarities between these cameras. We’ll stop making trivial comparisons of their features and proceed to noting peculiar and individual characteristics discovered during the experiments.
The Imperfectness of the Lens
Practical optics has very little in common with the geometrical sums in the physics lessons that students solve while learning about cameras as a kind of equipment. But however accurate the calculations may be, even the most carefully developed ( and rather expensive) model of the lens is not completely perfect. For example, there can be chromatic aberrations, when the objects on the image are colorfully haloed. Test results show that both cameras have the same level of chromatic aberrations. Surprisingly, in spite of the progress of the competitors, Canon hasn’t manage to overcome this problem when developing the Canon S3 into the Canon S5, even after the evolution within internal toolkit. On the whole, in my point of view, the number of drawbacks of cameras for ultra-zoom class is high.
Example 4 : chromatic aberrations are the colourful halos around the bridge footing. This example also displays the difference of the sharpness of the objects in the photo taken by different cameras, but we’ll discuss it later. At the top is the whole shot with the testing
area highlighted. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5. For both cameras we set semi-auto “Landscape” mode with completely closed aperture, 12x optical zoom in.
Shooting Close-ups - Macro modes
Macro-shooting is not an easy task for a camera, designed as the “the mater of landscape photography”. The technical characteristics for shooting bugs and spiders are just opposite of those for shooting sun-sets and mountain landscape. There are numerous items that can be
evaluated to identify the macro capacity of the camera. In particular, there is a famous test based upon not simply measuring the distance from the lens surface necessary for focusing, but making a photo of a small object wthin the whole shot. The smaller the object, the higher degree of macro capacity of your camera has.
We agreed to experiment upon the monetary unit of our country - coins of different values.
For both the Canon S3 and the Canon S5, macro-shooting is available in two different modes: “macro” and “super-macro”. We had expected to get the similar results, but it turned out that, with the Canon S5, the borderline between these modes suffers influence of its predecessor. While “macro” mode of the Canon S3 enables you to take a photo of 5 coins, that enlargement is not enough for the Canon S5 for it’s limit is 6 coins (shooting of 5 coins requires “super-macro” mode).
Example 5: On the left, a shot taken by the Canon S3; on the right, by the Canon S5.
After experimenting at length with “super-macro” mode we managed to take the image of a single coin. By the way, the coin is 15.5 mm in diameter. Unfortunately, this test can’t be characterized as complete. It might be possible to take photos of much smaller objects on the whole screen provided there is extra lighting ( the cover around the lens prevented the addition of more light:in fact the lens was resting on the object; we had to build up a flash reflector, manually-set ISO200 sensitivity, and at last lighten the image with an image editor program.
Example 6: “Super-macro” mode. On the left, a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5. The lack of light forced us to set the sensitivity to a high ISO level, and the bright halo around the coin is nothing but a flash, spread all over the tightly-stretched piece of white paper.
Sensor and ISO speed
Both cameras have sensors of 1/2.5′ size, the number of effective pixels (pixel value) is 6 - 8 megapixels. Nowadays 8 megapixels for that type of sensor seem to be the limit (A greater number is quite possible, though it might be not economically feasible).
An important characteristic of digital camera, referring to its sensor, is ISO speed. The manufacturer gives the ISO speed scale from 80 to 800 for the Canon S3 and up to 1600 for the Canon S5. Let’s experiment to evaluate data in low light condition.
Example 7: ISO80 speed. At the top is the whole shot with the testing area highlighted. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the the Canon S5 (shutter speed priority mode, external light; for better observation the highlighted areas are enlarged in an image editor).
Example 8: ISO100 speed. At the top is the whole shot with the testing area highlighted. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right - by the Canon S5 (shutter speed priority mode, external light; for better observation the highlighted areas are enlarged in an image editor).
Example 9: ISO200 speed. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5 (shutter speed priority mode, external light; for better observation the highlighted areas are enlarged in an image editor).
From the examples above we may see that an ISO speed within 80- 200 scale makes good results for both cameras, although the results with the higher ISO speeds are not so clear.
Example 10: ISO400 speed. Same cameras and same conditions as above.
Example 11: ISO800 speed. Same cameras and same conditions as above.
While shooting with ISO400 sensitivity gives equally good results, the setting of ISO800 sensitivity enables the new internal algorithm of noise reduction in the Canon S5 to come into play (Heaven knows how it happens - either via auto or programmed mode). As for ISO1600 sensitivity, it is absolutely useless; even the above mentioned noise reduction mechanism doesn’t cope with the noises. Though the manufacturer doesn’t hold this option back from customers.
Example 12: ISO1600 speed of the Canon S5. The same image patch, as in the previous examples (the shutter speed priority mode, external light; for better observation the marked out areas are enlarged in image editor).
By the way, during the experiments with ISO speed, another peculiar feature of both cameras had been noticed. They manage to operate the white balance mode equally good, except when the white balance mode should be set manually at high ISO speed (800 and 1600). The noises of the sensor seem to appear in the program accepted averaged color, that is white.
It is not a great obstacle to overcome for usually the candlelight is used at such a high ISO speed (the dim light of a table-lamp and dingy street-lamps, for example) and you may choose the appropriate manual setting. Still, it is strange why such an imperfect algorithm inherited from its predecessor didn’t go through any changes.
Focusing on the distant objects
It has already been mentioned (discussing chromatic aberrations) that we get different results when focusing on distant object by Canon S3 and Canon S5. To check the fact we shot a series of landscape images with 12x optical zoom in. The semi-auto “landscape” mode was set to provide completely closed aperture along with the other auto-set characteristics (in other words to realize the greatest possible depth of field). To meet the non-stop character of the experiment, the test shots were taken at once without choosing the object to focus on but as soon as the camera informs that its ready to shoot (as soon as it has focused on). In addition, to avoid different views of nature by the cameras, we set “Spot focus” mode. Let me show you the effect referring to the series of shots of a TV tower.
Example 13: Focusing on distant objects with 12x optical zoom in ( “Landscape” mode, “Spot focus” mode). At the top is the shot of the landscape without enlargement; in the middle- the same landscape with 12x optical zoom in (with highlighted testing area). At the bottom to the left is the image by the Canon S3, at the bottom to the right, the image by the Canon S5 (both shots have been enlarged in an image editor).
The results show the pre-eminence of the Canon S5 working in auto focus mode. Probably, the Canon S3 might have shown not as bad results, if it were used in manual focus mode, but then it would break the conditions of the experiment.
Toolkit
“Sharpness” is available for both cameras, being called “Rezkost” in Russian texts. It attracted most attention among the other settings, because in a way it may be regarded as the equivalent of the internal noise reduction option (it doesn’t reduce the noise but highlight the edges, that make impression of a high-quality shot). To test that no changes had been made within the algorithm, we took a number of shots with 400ISO speed (the noises are already conspicuous, but they do not prevail).
Example 14: Internal algorithm of increasing “Sharpness” for the Canon S3 and the Canon S5. At the top the photo with highlighted testing area. In the middle, a shot to the left, taken by the Canon S3 without increasing sharpness, a shot to the right, taken by the Canon S3 at a “high” level of “Sharpness”. In the row below the same operations with the Canon S5.
Based upon the examples above, we may say that this algorithm as well didn’t go through great changes: such a “delicate” way of increasing sharpness with a few artifacts left. It seems as though the manufacturer had not intended to update toolkit for a new model.
The algorithms of compression
It’s a pity, but neither of the cameras deals with RAW files (despite the Canon S5 sporting a new feature which is characteristic of a professional camera; that is, the flash hot shoe for external flash); all the image files are saved in JPEG format with various degree of resolution and compression (both are manually set). To compare the internal algorithms of compression we shot 2 series of photos in “Landscape” mode (to provide the best depth of field on the small far details). The center of the shot had been taken for the testing area to eliminate possibly the influence of the imperfect optics; all the changes were made in BMP format in order to make JPEG artifacts more conspicuous, and at the same time, not to add any extra while preparing shots for publishing; all the image patches were enlarged in the end.
Example 15: The comparison of the internal algorithms of compression for the Canon S3 and the Canon S5. At the top- the photo with highlighted testing area. The shots with the increasing degrees of compression follow below. On the left are the shots taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5.
The above examples display that the Canon S5 inherits from its predecessor the Canon S3 the visual effect of compression even for the high-quality images. I would recommend either increasing the super- quality of JPEGs (by any possible way) or contribute RAW- format (TIFF/ BMP- any of the formats that compresses without faults); the cameras really suffer from the lack of one!
Features
Among the pleasant innovations for Canon S5, such have been noticed (though not checked):
* extensive work with the same set of batteries (170 shots in stead of 110 - according to the results of the standard test by the manufacturer);
* a hot shoe and sync-contact for external flash.
Summing up
After practical work with both cameras, we at DigiCamFriends.com may conclude that some changes indeed have been made for the new model. This can be observed in such operations as focus on distant objects with high optical zoom or with high ISO speed. These new features helped to correct utter drawbacks found in the Canon S3, in comparison with the success of the similar pairs of cameras by other manufactures. The question is would you agree to pay for these innovations?
Goldilocks Bakery From the Past
One of the most popular chains of bakeries in the Philippines is Goldilocks Bakery. Goldilocks Bakery, or simply called Goldilocks, is a bakeshop based in the Philippines specializing in Filipino cakes and pastry, and cuisine. It’s been so many years when Goldilocks first started to serve Filipinos with their collection of premium cakes and pastries, but what else do we know about when and where Goldilocks first baked its cakes?
Goldilocks is among of the first and the oldest bakeries in the Philippines. The first branch was opened on 1966 in a one door apartment of a two story building in Pasong Tamo Street, Makati City. It was a family business back then, in which now grew to be among of the largest bakeries in the world.
Goldilocks Bakery first opened its US branch in Artesia, California, on 1976. It has 192 Goldilocks branches and has planned to add 15 to 20 more, especially in Naga City where the founders of the bakeshop are based.
In addition, Goldilocks’ biggest bakery and restaurant can be found on Las Vegas, Nevada where Filipinos in the country can still enjoy the unique cuisine of the Philippine even if they’re miles away from where they were born.
Aside from its main product lines such as cakes and breads, sweets and pastries, some branches of Goldilocks Bakery also incorporate a Food shop. Goldilocks also offers Filipino cuisine for Filipinos abroad, including beef, chicken, pork, seafood and vegetable dishes as well as their Thirst Quenchers, such as halo-halo, gulaman, fruit salad and sago.
There are many ways in which a person can buy some of Goldilocks’ popular menus. But when it comes to providing a way for having those delivered, then Express Regalo can provide that way.
Express Regalo is an online gift shop catering to all the needs of people when it comes to gifts such as beauty products, electronics and appliances, entertainment, flowers, food, mass cards, prepaid cards, and toys.
Express Regalo can provide services that can help Filipinos abroad a way to send Goldilocks food products easily and effortlessly. For more information about the Express Regalo, then visit

To the keen eyes and creative minds of the designers, everything about a vehicle is an invention that is perfect to turn it into a fashionably-laden-featured creation. As such, the front-end part of the vehicle was found to be the most perfect subject of customization or modification. As headlights are conspicuously situated in both sides of the front-end part, these were the first equipments that are subjected for cosmetic applications. Naturally, its functional essence is not sacrificed and was even upgraded more. It was merely transformed from automotive safety-guiding equipments into something to serve as jewelry piece of the vehicle.
How to Think More Clearly

The art of clear thinking is a learnable technique that will help you to sharpen your mind and allow you to cut through rhetoric and evaluate the reasoning (if any) behind the words.
To initiate this process, I want to show you six common fallacies, which blur accurate analysis of ideas.
Learn them and apply them every day.
Democratic fallacy
Unreliable reasoning that stems from the idea that the “majority opinion” is a source of truth and a reliable guide for action.
This is a very dodgy way to discover “Truth”
For example;
Imagine a passenger aircraft is having engine trouble.
Would it be right for the pilot to hold a vote as to whether they should attempt an emergency landing?
If not, why not?
Is the majority opinion in the office a reliable guide to intelligent action?
Can a million people be wrong?
Be careful if you are tempted to reinforce your argument with the cry “everyone else thinks so, too.”
Correlation-cause confusion
Correlation-Cause confusion is a common trap that people fall into. Just because two things occur at the same time does not necessarily mean that one caused the other.
It is a mistake to treat a correlation as a causal connection
If I put on my lucky ring, and I go out and find a ten pound note, did the ring cause it to happen?
If a new boss comes to work and the sales next month go down, what does it mean?
Getting personal
Getting personal is the mistake of dismissing an idea because of the person suggesting it.
Imagine an overweight scientist has done research to prove that exercise reduces the risk of heart disease.
You could be tempted to say, “What does he know? Look at the state of him!”
Or you could say “He should practice what he preaches” and dismiss the valuable idea.
Halo effect
Halo effect is the reverse of the above. It means that you give extra credibly to an idea because of the person.
For example Elvis Presley was asked whether he thought the Americans were right to be at war in Vietnam.
He wisely answers ” I don’t want to get into that. I am an entertainer. Ask me about my music”
I remember a radio programme asking agony-aunt Claire Raynor what she thought about the state of the criminal justice system in England and Wales.
What specialised knowledge does her opinion carry?
Separate ideas from the person proposing them and evaluated an idea as a “thing” in its own right. Determine if the idea can act as a guide to intelligent action.
Arbitrary assertion
Is an unsubstantiated statement of belief with no principle, reasoning or sensory evidence to support it.
It is a mistake to grant plausibility to an assertion simply because it is forcefully delivered or repeated.
Frequency and volume should never take the place of logic in your decision to accept an idea as true.
Napoleon once quipped “Repetition is my strongest argument” (and then lost 250,000 in his disastrous Russian campaign)
Equally, it follows that you should avoid trying to convince someone else by simply becoming louder and more passionate. Instead strive to make your reasoning inescapable.
Gamblers fallacy
Is the mistaken belief that your chances of winning increases the longer you play.
This is a false idea.
If you are doing the wrong thing it makes no difference how long you do it. It still will not work.
If your current plan has not been yielding any meaningful results, it will not change fortunes tomorrow.
* Change your ideas.
* Change the plan.
* Change the actions.
* The results must and will change.
Critical reasoning to develop clarity of thought will cause you to do three things:
You will:
* Listen more intently
* Ask more questions
* Think more before you make your decision
All of these will help you get better results
Four step formula for constructing an argument
1. Make sure that the reasons/evidence you offer are relevant to the conclusion. (Ensure your reasoning has no fallacies).
2. Is your conclusion the best based on the reasons or evidence? Ask, Is this conclusion justified.
3. If your conclusion is for some new action or policy, can the policy be carried out practically?
4. Consider the counter arguments that could weaken your position. Make sure you have accessed all relevant information.
